Digital Marketing Opportunity: Monzo
In my second year of FMB, I selected the Digital Marketing and Communications module to further expand my knowledge and skills on the topic. The module was my first time learning about UI/UX design, which really sparked my interest and has grown since.
The primary output for the module was a group project, resulting in a summative report and 5 minute concept video. We were tasked with identifying a digital opportunity for a given brand, Monzo, which appealed to their young consumer base and encouraged brand loyalty.
Upon completing some initial research into the macro environment around Monzo, I proposed the idea of an embedded ‘Stocks & Shares’ feature that would sit within the Monzo banking app… Scroll down to find out more!

The finalised concept was an accessible ‘Stocks & Shares’ feature implemented on the Monzo banking app. Aimed at university students, it introduces and educates young consumers on the idea of investing and saving for life post-university. Gamification was also considered: the user can set saving goals and receive rewards (such as a 10% offer from a demographically-relevant brand) for achieving their goal. Consumers need to trust their banks, and if Monzo provided a low-stakes ‘Stocks & Shares’ service it could increase brand loyalty and positive associations.
Individually, I was fully responsible for the initial identification of the opportunity, supporting evidence for the idea (+ wider market and trend research), synthesis of all the research, the creation of the working prototype, the prototype mock-ups, the 5-minute concept video, as well as the design and layout of the report. I also created some original icons (the Monzo cards in red, orange, pink, and blue) for use in the prototype, report and video! For the report’s writing, I wrote the introduction, concept details, concept journey, and the future of the concept.
In the end, I was (and still am!) extremely proud of the concept, and all the work I put in.

Here are some screenshots of the AdobeXD document, where you can see some of the individual screens I made for the prototype! In the slideshow are also some images of the mock-ups I made, using the screens from XD. The mock-ups help to make the idea seem real, and to fully visualise how it would work.
All of the work shown is completely my own and original- besides the Monzo logo (and branding!) and the base template for the mock-ups. It was important to keep the look and feel of the Monzo banking app for the prototype, as the proposed concept would sit directly within the app. Carrying over the branding and overall ‘feel’ of Monzo to the new concept was initially challenging, however once I found what worked it all fell into place.
Within the mock-ups, I also wanted to highlight the educational aspect of the proposed ‘Stocks & Shares’ feature. This came from the realisation that Monzo’s consumers, predominantly young (Gen-Z), may not know much about stocks and shares, or have very limited financial literacy, therefore would need an easy-to-understand explanation available in-app. To demonstrate and explain the concept of stocks and shares, I used marbles as a metaphor!

The concept video was submitted alongside the final report. I was solely responsible for its creation- something which I’d never done before! The video was made using Adobe Premiere Pro, supported by walkthrough videos of the prototype, as well as royalty-free background music.
