Vice President

Member Attainment, Engagement, and Retainment + More

This year (2023 - 24), I was elected to the role of Vice President. Inherently, there was an increase in responsibility with the new position- as well as having to continue with the Treasurer’s responsibilities.

Highlights

In March, we collaborated with ‘The Big Swap Events’ to host a clothes swap for our members and non-members! Individually, I was responsible for aiding in the organisation of the event, as well as promotion and communication with our members. The event was a success, with a great turnout and positive feedback from the attendees.

To raise awareness about Fashion Revolution Week and the impact of festivals on the environment, we collaborated with Event Society and threw a charity fashion show: Re-Fashioned Revolution. The clothing was solely supplied by Oxfam, with myself and the society’s president selecting the clothing items. I was responsible for part of the styling, as well as communication and promotion of the event to our members.

Communications Strategy

At the start of the academic year I created a series of ‘branded’ touchpoints and social posts to raise awareness and increase engagement through our primary social channel: Instagram. I wanted to represent a more cohesive identity that was both consistent and represented ‘Fashion Revolution’.

Treasurer

Finance Tracking, Budgeting, Budget Planning

My first year on the committee (2022 - 23) I was elected to be Treasurer. The main responsibilities for the role were finance tracking and budget planning, as well as submitting the needed finance forms on time. There were two opportunities throughout the year to apply for extra funding for special events or activities, which required a high quality written and evidence-supported application; both submissions were successful and received the amount requested despite the high competition from other societies.

The committee structure was very collaborative, meaning that although I was in the Treasurer role, I did have the opportunity to help out with other areas in the society, such as the organisation of socials and events, maintaining communication between the society and the committee, as well as liaising with external organisations.

Highlights

In November of 2022, we hosted an event at the local Lush store. It was a perfect collaboration, as Lush is an ethics-focused brand that endeavours to consider sustainability in all aspects of their operations- something Fashion Revolution heavily supports. At the event, a brand representative delivered a talk on Lush’s business practices and the ways they deliver sustainability. After, there were a series of short workshops where our members were able to make their own product, learn more about the brand, and receive product demonstrations. This event was a successful blend of education and fun, as well as a values-aligned collaboration!

Close to the Fashion Revolution Week in 2023, we went on a trip to Manchester to see the ‘Dandy Menswear’ exhibition. Looking at the history of fashion can provide a modern appreciation for clothing, as well as aid in understanding design context. In order to generate more engagement on the society’s Instagram, I took the opportunity to use Instagram Stories to take our members (that weren’t able to go on the trip) along with us at the exhibition. In the end, we sold all the tickets and our members had a great time!
